Even though areas of the ocean have been found sufficient enough in macronutrients to support a plankton bloom, they have also been found to be lacking in Iron, which is essential for a plankton bloom to get started.
Scientists have found that by 'seeding' the waters with iron they've been able to get plankton blooms started in these barren areas of the ocean. There are a few good reasons for seeding the ocean with iron to start new plankton blooms.
1. Plankton are the basis of the food chain and provide food to many species of fish larva, so the number of fish is largely dependent on the amount of plankton.
2. Plankton blooms help pull carbon out of the atmosphere. Its been theorized that by seeding the ocean we can create plankton blooms large enough to halt global warming.
